Dino Varkey has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of GEMS Education since February 2017, guiding its strategic growth and operational excellence across multiple international markets. A third-generation member of the Varkey family and son of founder Sunny Varkey, he has played a central role in expanding the organisation from a single school in Dubai into a global network educating over 200,000 students from more than 176 countries.
Established in the UAE in 1959, GEMS Education is widely recognised as one of the world’s most established and expansive private K–12 education providers. The group delivers a broad range of curricula designed to serve students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, with schools operating across the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. Under Varkey’s leadership, GEMS has strengthened its commitment to accessible, high-quality education through innovative programmes, philanthropic initiatives, and active community engagement.
His tenure has prioritised inclusion, student wellbeing, digital integration, and academic excellence. Flagship initiatives such as GEMS For Life, Family First, and the Academies of Excellence reflect his focus on holistic student development and strong community partnerships. Varkey also serves on various advisory boards and consistently advocates for education as a catalyst for social mobility, economic progress, and intergenerational advancement.
A strong proponent of sustainability, he champions environmental stewardship through initiatives such as PLANT A LEGACY (#PAL), which has supported the planting of more than 40,000 trees across 42 countries. Environmental education is embedded within the GEMS curriculum, addressing topics including waste management, recycling, and climate change to cultivate responsible global citizenship. In partnership with Dulsco Waste Management Services, GEMS schools have implemented comprehensive waste segregation and recycling practices, reinforcing the organisation’s leadership in sustainable development and community responsibility.
