Uncertainty touches every human life. As a doctor, I see this often in different forms, whether it be new rules, changing jobs, personal failures, or unexpected life developments. Each of these moments reminds us of one truth: uncertainty is always around us.

But sometimes uncertainty feels heavier.

Right now, many people in the UAE are experiencing a very unique form of it. The feeling of being caught between global tensions and not knowing what may happen next. Some people say stay, some say leave, and the truth is that no one really knows what the right decision is.

And that uncertainty creates something very real in the human body: the fight-or-flight response.

What Happens in the Body During Stress

When we feel threatened or uncertain, our brain activates a protective mechanism called the fight-or-flight response. This response is controlled by the nervous system and releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones prepare the body to either confront the situation or escape from it. Your heart may beat faster, your thoughts may race, and you may feel a constant sense of alertness or unease. This reaction is completely natural. It is the body’s way of trying to keep us safe.

However, when uncertainty continues for long periods of time, the mind may remain in this heightened state of alertness. This is when many people begin to experience a lingering feeling of worry or unease, even when life appears normal on the outside. The more I speak to people around me these days, the more evident this feeling becomes. Beneath everyday conversations, there is often a quiet question many people are asking themselves internally: Should we stay and face this situation, or should we leave to feel safer? This is the classic fight-or-flight dilemma, and it is perfectly human to experience it.

Sometimes the world around us may feel outside our control. But we still have control over how we center ourselves. Whether it’s during a coffee break, in the middle of lunch, or even between meetings, pause for a moment and take a few slow breaths. Even while reading this, try taking one deep breath. It signals to the body that it is safe, helping the nervous system slow down.

While staying informed is important, continuous exposure to distressing updates can increase anxiety. Taking small breaks from the news allows the mind to reset and prevents the stress response from staying constantly activated.

Conversations about everyday life, such as work, small achievements, shared meals, or even something as simple as discussing your day, help maintain a sense of normalcy. These small moments of connection remind us that life continues beyond uncertainty.

Routines create stability when everything else feels unpredictable. For example, my partner and I make it a point to go for a walk every morning. We begin our day with matcha and a few affirmations before starting work. Even setting up one dedicated place at home for online work created a sense of security, certainty, and togetherness.

One practice that helped me deeply during uncertain moments was reaching out to people I care about and simply asking if they were okay. Not only did it offer reassurance, but it also reminded me of the immense love and support around me. Gratitude shifts the mind away from fear and helps us recognize the strength of our community.

  1. A Gentle Reminder

Last but not the least, allow yourself to pause. In moments when the world feels overwhelming, it is okay not to have every answer immediately. Sometimes calm does not come from solving everything at once, but from accepting the present moment as it is.

When we breathe, stay connected to our loved ones, maintain small routines, and practice gratitude, we slowly create stability within ourselves, even when the world around us feels uncertain. After all, calm is not the absence of uncertainty but the ability to remain centered despite it.
