As LIONS prepares to make its Riyadh debut in December 2027, Tahaluf CEO Mike Champion speaks to Entrepreneur Middle East about bringing one of the world’s most influential creative platforms to Saudi Arabia, unlocking opportunities for regional talent, and why great ideas must deliver more than creative excellence.
The next chapter of the Middle East’s creative economy could be written in Riyadh. As Saudi Arabia continues to establish itself as an international destination for business, innovation, and entertainment, another global industry heavyweight is preparing to make its mark on the Kingdom: LIONS.
Set to debut from December 6–8, 2027, at King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), LIONS Riyadh aims to bring together some of the most influential minds in advertising, marketing, media, and the wider creative industries. But its ambitions extend beyond bringing an internationally recognized festival to a new market.
For Mike Champion, CEO of Tahaluf, the company behind the event, the opportunity lies in connecting the region’s rapidly evolving creative ecosystem with international expertise while creating a platform that reflects the Middle East’s distinct identity, talent, and commercial ambitions.
Speaking to Entrepreneur Middle East, Champion highlighted the significance of bringing a platform with decades of global influence directly to the region.
“Now we’re able to host a major aspect of that within the region here in the city of Riyadh,” he said.
The arrival of LIONS Riyadh represents another step in positioning Saudi Arabia as a meeting point for international industries. This time, however, the spotlight shifts toward the people and businesses shaping the future of creativity.
While the festival will retain elements familiar to the global LIONS community, Champion emphasized that Riyadh will have an identity of its own.
Arabic-language creativity, regional audiences, and the unique characteristics of the Middle East’s advertising and media markets will form an important part of the conversation.
For regional brands, agencies, publishers, and creators, that distinction matters. Rather than simply importing international perspectives, the festival presents an opportunity for the region’s creative industry to participate in global conversations while bringing its own experiences and ideas to the table.
It also creates a platform for greater interaction between local businesses and international industry leaders, offering access to the ideas, relationships, and expertise that have helped shape some of the world’s leading creative markets.
Perhaps the most defining element of the festival’s proposed direction is its focus on a question increasingly relevant to entrepreneurs and business leaders: What makes creativity commercially valuable?
For Champion, creative brilliance alone is only part of the equation.
LIONS Riyadh will focus “not just on creative excellence, but also on creative effectiveness,” he explained.
The distinction puts business performance at the heart of the creative conversation. A compelling campaign or an innovative concept may capture attention, but understanding whether that creativity translates into measurable results is equally important.
Through international thought leaders and industry discussions, the festival intends to explore the ideas and creative approaches that are generating tangible impact.
For entrepreneurs, emerging agencies, and growing brands, the emphasis on effectiveness introduces a particularly relevant dimension. Creativity is not simply an exercise in storytelling or brand visibility; it can also become a strategic business tool.
By bringing creative excellence and commercial effectiveness into the same conversation, LIONS Riyadh has an opportunity to connect creative ambition with the business realities facing companies across the region.
Beyond its programming, the festival is expected to create opportunities for connections across the international creative ecosystem.
Global creators, publishers, influencers, marketing executives, and senior industry decision-makers are expected to come together in Riyadh, creating an environment in which regional participants can engage directly with international expertise and industry practices.
For Saudi Arabia’s developing creative economy, the potential extends beyond the three-day festival itself.
The relationships and knowledge exchanged at international gatherings can help shape future collaborations, expose emerging businesses to new commercial opportunities, and give regional talent greater visibility within established global networks.
The ambition is to make Riyadh not simply a host city for an international creative gathering, but an active participant in the conversations shaping the industry’s future.
For Tahaluf, bringing LIONS to Saudi Arabia is part of a much broader strategy.
The company has already established a track record of introducing and developing major international event brands in the Kingdom across a diverse range of industries, including technology, finance, real estate, and healthcare.
Its portfolio includes Money20/20, Black Hat, Cityscape, and CPHI, reflecting an approach built around connecting international industry platforms with Saudi Arabia’s expanding business landscape.
“We haven’t just done it once or twice,” Champion said. “We’ve done it with eight of the world’s biggest brands across multiple sectors.”
LIONS Riyadh represents an opportunity to apply that experience to an entirely different ecosystem, one where creative talent, brand storytelling, technology, and commercial performance intersect.
For Champion, the company’s ability to execute events on an international scale will be central to delivering on the festival’s ambitions.
“What I’d say Tahaluf brings to that is the capability, the know-how, and the proven track record of being able to deliver clear, world-class events.”
As preparations move forward, LIONS Riyadh will be an opportunity to explore how the region’s creative industries can connect more closely with the global market.
And with creative effectiveness positioned alongside creative excellence, the conversation in Riyadh will go beyond celebrating exceptional ideas. It will also examine what those ideas can achieve for the businesses, brands, and industries investing in them.
